The Insufferable Author's Guide to Literary Domination: An Epic Saga of Protests, Prose, and Postage Problems (Or How NOT to Write a Book and Pester Publishers) #comedy #blog

 by
Louise Wise

Compose your manuscript in a dazzling display of creativity—single-spaced, with each side of the paper brimming with your genius. Choose a font that screams individuality, like the exquisite Curlz MT. No computer? No problem! Many agents still relish handwritten manuscripts—some prefer them!

Begin with a breathtaking description of your surroundings—let the reader feel the mist on their skin and envision the majestic cows grazing in the distance. Grammar, typos, and spelling? Forget about them! The copy editor will gleefully tackle those trivialities, grateful for the opportunity to enhance your masterpiece.

Chapter length? Irrelevant. Just ensure each one starts afresh from page one. Then proudly dispatch your 300,000-word opus, meticulously stapled and encased in plastic wallets, to every agent and publisher on the planet.

Craft your query/cover letter with the utmost pomposity. Remind the recipient of your sheer brilliance and don't hesitate to name-drop Aunt Fanny, Cousin Willy, and dear old grandma as adoring fans.

In the labyrinthine twenty-page synopsis, throw genre conventions out the window and leave the agents scratching their heads. Drop tantalising hints of a genre-defying masterpiece - part romance, part suspense, part horror, and a generous dollop of your own life's drama thrown in for good measure. It's like a literary potluck--you never know what you're going to get, but it's bound to be a wild ride!

Get your hands on a neon envelope and blast the agent/publisher's address in a hue so bright it practically blinds them. Slap on stickers proclaiming your arrival as the 'Greatest Author' because subtlety is overrated. Seal the whole package with enough Sellotape to challenge even the most skilled escape artist, and don't bother with the correct postage - let the postman deal with the consequences.

As for a self-addressed envelope? Nah, too easy. Instead, bombard them with daily phone calls until they're practically begging for your manuscript. Then, demand payment faster than a cheetah on roller skates. After all, why wait for fame and fortune when you can demand it now?

Hold fast and never entertain the thought of rejection. Should they have the audacity to spurn your literary genius, unleash the full force of your righteous fury in a blistering letter, highlighting their unforgivable oversight. Demand an audience with the bigwigs, and if that falls flat, stage a dramatic protest outside their hallowed halls until the long arm of the law intervenes.

Only then will they grasp the magnitude of your dedication to revolutionising the literary landscape with your unparalleled fusion of romance, suspense, horror, and personal memoir.

Writers, unite and conquer!

An interview with Zarina from A Memory for Love #characterinterview #fantasy #books

A Memory for Love
by
Linzé Brandon

Zarina sa'Der is a category one memory witness trained to work with the most vulnerable victims of violent crimes. Her last court case left her with nightmares, which required her to take a break to focus on clearing her special memory banks before she went insane. As a Treasure of the Magicians' Order, the Grandmaster arranges for her to take her vacation at the High Order retreat for the ideal peace and quiet she needs.

It has been three suns since Aidan Crea lost his mate and youngest daughter in the Wa'raki war that devastated Xa'an. When his best friend accuses him of becoming a grump, he agrees to take a break before the Grandmaster orders him to. After some soul-searching, he realizes that he needs to get back to living instead of purely existing after the loss he has suffered.

Zarina and Aidan form an unusual friendship that soon grows into something deeper until Aidan is tasked with protecting her after a contract is given out to assassinate her. Although her job exposes her to the worst criminals in society, things take a turn for the worse when they finally find out who is behind the attempts on her life.

They find themselves pawns in a larger plot and risk their hearts and lives to finally get a chance at a happily ever after.

Interview with the character from A Memory for Love

What is your full name? Do you have a nickname?
My name is Zarina Elri sa'Der, and I don't have a nickname, sorry.

What is your background? What makes you you?
was born a magician, and from a young age, I knew that my path was not going to follow the traditional route because of my ancestry. This did not limit my choices at all, and I am fortunate that my parents supported my choice to study at the Xa'anian School of Magic and Knowledge to become a memory witness. Our training starts at an early age; I was about seven, and involved rigorous and disciplined training in magic control. I am the only category one witness, and my teachers learned early on that I needed to develop my skills my way. Memory witness teachers are used to this and provided me with the guidance I needed to hone my skillset.

Can you explain what a memory witness is? It sounds intriguing.
A memory witness is a magician who can record someone's memories by copying their brain patterns. This information is relayed during a court case, where the victim is either incapable or too traumatised to testify.

Where do you live?
I live in the capital city of Xa'an, Ikea. Xa'an is located in the third solar system. It is my dream, however, to retire in the village of Akan, because it is situated on the edge of a beautiful forest. I love the forest, and often go there to hike amongst the trees and waterfalls.

Who are your parents? Are they still alive?

They are Aaron and Liz'aBe sa'Der and they live in the second solar system where I was born. They are very much alive and in good health.

How do you travel from solar system to solar system? Do you use magic?
It depends on the person travelling. Magicians travel with spaceships, but other humanoid beings travel by other means. And no one can travel that distance using magic!

How would you describe your childhood?
I had a happy childhood despite the history of my people. My extended family is small, but we are all close despite the distance between us.

How old are you? Do you worry about getting older?

I am 29. Since I was born with magic power, I will age much slower than non-magic folk. This requires me to look after myself so that my source of magic remains active and productive, which will help slow down my ageing process. The typical life expectancy of a magician is around 300 suns (or years, as you would call it here on Earth).

So your magic can slow the ageing process but not send you around the galaxies!

Do you have a job/hobby?
I work as an officer in the security service of Xa'an. I work with victims of violent crime who cannot speak for themselves. If I had a hobby, it would be hiking. I love being outside in nature.

Me too! So, Zarina, what would you say is your biggest wish/desire?
It may sound weird, but I would love to live in a world where my job is superfluous. My skills can then be utilised to help people in a more positive environment. But until that happens, I will speak for the victims because their voices need to be heard for justice to be served.

Who is the person you respect the most, and why?
Grandmaster Géra Ville and his 2IC, Lord Aidan Crea, are the two people who lead the Xa'anian Magician's Order. Along with the rest of the Members of the High Order, they work hard to establish an order with members who contribute their skills to the benefit of everyone on Xa'an: humans, magicians, shape-shifters, and others. They enforce the magic rules and work together with human authorities and the king to create a society of equality and respect for everyone.

Do you have a secret? Does anyone else know the secret? What would happen if you told someone this secret?
Yes, I have a secret or two. Aside from my family, no one knows who and what I am. I share my secret with a small circle of trusted people, but they are also aware of the dangers of sharing that knowledge. It was necessary to share the knowledge for their own sakes.

Do you own a gun (or any other weapon)? Killed anyone (either purposely or not)?
Officers in the Xa'anian security service do not carry weapons, as a rule. A few select officers do, but they are only called into duty for very specific tasks, which I am not at liberty to discuss. My magical ability allows me to incapacitate someone, but I am not trained in offensive or defensive magic. I can, however, share power with a warrior if he or she needs more power to use in a magic battle.

Are you happy now your story has been told? Is there more to come?
Yes, for sure. I have been bugging my author for years to tell my story, and even I was surprised at some things that happened. Since my book is part of a series, readers will meet me again in future stories, as has been the case for many of the friends I have made along the way. (Note for the author: Zarina will be around again in Tarryn's Vampire, a future Grandmaster novel in the series.)

What, if anything, would you like to change about your life?
Something horrible happens in my story as a result of a choice I make. I will continue to feel guilty for that for the rest of my life, even though everyone assures me that the tragedy wasn't my fault. It is the one thing that if I could have predicted the future, I would have done differently.

Who is the person you despise the most?
The person I despise the most is the one behind all the tragedies, death threats, and deaths in my story. I hate him for putting the lives of innocents and good people in danger for his own cowardly and nefarious plans.

If you knew you were going to die in 24 hours, name three things you would do in the time you had left.
I would contact my parents and blood relations to tell them how much I love them. I would also talk to my new friends to tell them how much their support and friendships mean to me, and lastly, I would spend the whole time with the man I love...without sleeping a wink.

Excerpt from A Memory for Love, Book 7 in the Nations of Peace series.

Aidan ignored the cold stones numbing his ass and the rigid bricks biting into his back. They were of no consequence. The true pain had been inside of him so long that he hardly recognised himself. Had grief done this? That didn’t feel right, so he must have been doing it to himself. Albeit subconsciously. Until now, he had not been ready to move forward. Someone once said that life was for the living, and tonight, he finally felt ready to take that first painful step.

With a groan, he got to his feet. Damn, the cold had made his muscles stiffer than he realised. Stretching his arms, he paused.

 Buy the book!

“What was that?”

He moved to the end of the balcony. There it was again. It sounded like...

Ignoring his bare feet and the cold, he jumped over the balcony railing and took a moment to find his balance before he ran. As he came closer, his anger cleared the fog from his mind. No one hurt a woman. Seconds later, he was over the balcony railing and bursting through the flimsy balcony door.

Just as the light came on.

The door panels, fortunately not made of glass, crashed. The impetus drove him to the bed. He almost fell on top of her.

Shrinking back on the bed, Zarina watched it all with wide eyes.

Feeling undignified, Aidan managed to control his body enough to stop at her bedside. He looked around the room. Everything looked fine, but he was sure she had screamed earlier.

“Where is he?”

She frowned at him. “Who?”

“The man who attacked you.” Then he saw traces of tears on her face. He sat down on the bed. “Are you alright?”

Wiping her eyes with the sheet, she turned her head away. “I am fine. There is no one here. I have nightmares sometimes, that’s all.”

It was his turn to frown. She looked so young with her hair down and wearing a white nightgown. Then his brain clicked.

“Your last court case?”

Her head snapped back to his. “You know who I am?”

“Yes. I finally remembered why you looked so familiar. Didn’t you learn how to purge your memories so that you don’t have nightmares?”

She shrugged. “The case was long, and I didn’t do all my meditations as I should have. It just caught up with me. I will be fine after I start working at it tomorrow.”

Confident that there was no real threat, he got up.

She grabbed his wrist. “I am sorry about earlier. I didn’t mean to remind you of painful things.”

An interview with Ulprec from the amazing children’s book The Anteater King!

An interview with Ulprec from the amazing children’s book The Anteater King!

Join Ulprec, a mouse, and Sombra, a fierce feline, as they embark on an epic journey. They flee from their home in South America to escape 'The Burning', a malevolent force determined to destroy everything in its path.

These two brave companions must navigate the treacherous jungle and overcome countless obstacles to save their world from certain doom.

anteater king

You want to take advantage of this thrilling adventure of courage, determination, and friendship. Join them on their harrowing quest as they fight for their survival and the future of their beloved home.

This exciting story is recommended for readers aged 10 and above.

Welcome to the protagonist interview for Book Buddies!

What is your full name?

Ulprec.

What is your background? What makes Ulprec you?

I’m… not sure what makes me me; perhaps my tail, my ears? Hmmm… I live with my friend Sombra, a large female tuxedo cat, with her human caretaker Celia, an only child like me, and her parents. I am VERY talkative, as you’ll probably notice. Sombra does not talk at all, and I never mind having a lengthy, one-sided conversation.

It sounds like you could be a talkative mouse. Do you talk yourself into or out of danger?

I like to think I have a nose for staying out of unnecessary trouble. I may not be much, but I would do anything for the ones who show me love and compassion.

Where do you live?

A small village in South America, which is being destroyed by an unknown, malevolent force called La Quema.

What is La Quema? It sounds really scary. Should I be scared?

It is hard to explain. It is a big fire that has a mind. The fires start from nowhere, and out of these fires come men, or creatures that imitate the forms of men, that are made out of total darkness.

I was right. I should be scared! If you looked in a mirror, would you like what you saw?

I’m not sure what a mirror is, sorry. I guess it would depend on what was in it. If this ‘mirror’ were full of cheese and berries, I would like seeing that. Celia gives me these little berries that turn my little fingers purple. This is sort of making me hungry.

What are your likes/dislikes?

LIKES: I was going to say something else, but now I’m thinking about cheese and berries, so we’ll just begin with that. Other than that, passing the days aimlessly with six-year-old Celia and the elegant Sombra.

DISLIKES: Snakes and birds are bad news. Being alone is no fun. But most of all, I don’t like to see others in pain.

What would be your biggest wish/desire?

For things to return to the way they were in a time before La Quema’s fiery, unforgiving wrath. Life was perfect.

Who are your parents? Are they still alive?

There are no other of my kind in my life. I don’t remember my parents, nor if I had any siblings. I have no mate and no offspring of my own. I don’t know how I came to live with the human Celia and her parents in their modest home. The feelings of aloneness are what make me cling so devotedly to the few creatures I am lucky enough to have in my life, and those I am destined to meet along the way.

What would you change about yourself if you could wave a magic wand?

I wish I was brave, beautiful, and able to handle myself in a fight like my dearest friend Sombra. She is literally perfect; so soft and pretty, so sure of herself, so fast and strong, she fears nothing.

What do you think about the current news in your area?

It is beyond horrible. Large fires are burning the jungle and entire villages. I’m afraid my village will be next. Everyone and everything is suffering. No one knows why all of this is happening, and it is terrifying.

How honest are you about your thoughts and feelings?

Overly honest, and totally unafraid to let others know what I am feeling and thinking. If talking was a superpower, I would be the mightiest hero in the whole world!

Who is the person you despise the most?

I don’t hate anyone. I only know one person, and that’s Celia. She is wonderful to me.

Not even her parents?

I am familiar with the sight of her parents, and I don't think they'd be too happy if they saw me scurrying around their house, but I don’t hate them. As I said, I don’t hate anyone.

Can you save Celia from La Quema?

I wish I could save her, but I am so very small.

If you knew you were going to die in 24 hours, name three things you would do in the time you had left.

First, I’d let the ones I care about know how much I love them. Second, snuggle in Sombra’s soft, black fur one last time. Third, eat my last meal out of little Celia’s hand.

An excerpt from The Anteater King

Ulprec was familiarly accustomed to the one-sidedness of his relationship with his large feline friend, which made those ‘once in a blue moon’ morsels of her attention so welcome and captivating.

As Ulprec lay upon his back, drawing and releasing exhausted breaths, his tiny eyes retracted from the pains in his delicate limbs, Sombra calmly approached and began licking the mouse’s injuries.

After a few dozen lathers of warm feline saliva, Ulprec felt the dull ache in his feet melt away somehow: like a mother’s kiss upon the injury of her distressed child. Pain departed and comfort ensued in the mouse as he lay there upon the jungle floor.

‘What ever would I do without you around, dearest Sombra?’ Ulprec thought to himself.

Sombra stood tall again, circled a few steps around to the opposite side of her companion and proceeded to curl her soft body around him. There had never been a hole in the wall, nor a nook close to the roof of his old home whose warmth could compare to that of the dark fur and flesh over the oversized tuxedo cat. Its coziness and security were that of a mother’s womb.

As helpless and exhausted as he was, Ulprec felt as though nothing could hurt him as he rested. Not the jungle, nor its inhabitants, not the fires of La Quema itself… nothing.

Insights on Writing the First Draft.

Insights on Writing Fiction the First Draft

Writing fiction is like taking a magical journey, much like the path you walk when walking the dog--make sure you look where you're stepping!

On a lighter note, you get to create whole new worlds, give birth to characters, and spin yarns that captivate readers and transport them to new realms of imagination. It’s like playing God but with a pen instead of a lightning bolt.

For most authors, writing fiction starts with a “Eureka!” moment. From this tiny spark, a story blooms, taking shape through hours of brainstorming, exploration, and the occasional bottle of wine. Each author has their own unique approach to the creative process, drawing from personal experiences, observations, and the vast tapestry of human emotions to breathe life into their characters and worlds.

In addition to creating memorable characters, authors must master the art of storytelling. It’s like baking a cake, but instead of sugar and flour, you use plot, pacing, and narrative arc to create a delicious literary treat. The journey of a well-told story is a rollercoaster of emotions and revelations, like riding a unicorn through a rainbow.

Of course, the path to writing fiction has its challenges. But through perseverance and dedication, authors overcome these obstacles, trusting in their creative instincts and embracing the process of exploration and experimentation. Many authors find solace and inspiration in the rituals and routines that shape their writing practice, like drinking coffee, taking a walk, or yelling at their significant other dog.

Writing fiction is no joke, but the journey can be a lot more fun than you'd expect. Forget about the lone writer typing away in a dimly lit room - authors need feedback, support, and a good laugh to stay sane. That's why they turn to beta readers, editors, and fellow writers, who help them polish their prose, develop realistic characters, and prevent them from going completely bonkers. So, if you want to be a writer, remember this: you're not alone, and you're not crazy - well, not completely.

The art of writing fiction is like a roller coaster ride - it's exhilarating, unpredictable, and can make you feel a little queasy at times. But hey, that's all part of the fun!

Aspiring writers, prepare yourselves for a wild ride filled with plot twists, character development, and the occasional existential crisis. So buckle up, grab a snack, and let's see where this literary journey takes us!

Louise Wise also writes under the pen name T E Kessler.

Do you easily fall in love?

Do you have any regrets in life?

Which person in your family (or friends) are you the closest to?

I totally lost it and got super annoyed with myself when I fell for my bestie. I didn't just fall for her easily, it took me four whole years to realise my feelings! But when I finally worked up the courage to tell her how I felt, I messed up and tried to hook up with her, which really hurt her feelings. That's my biggest regret because she's my closest friend.

Enjoy!
